ER Mapper of West Perth, Western Australia, has released the source code to its ECW JPEG 2000 Software Development Kit (SDK). The SDK allows software developers to add support for large geospatial images in Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW) and JPEG 2000 format to their applications. ER Mapper's ECW image format is used for large (multi-terabyte) geospatial images. JPEG 2000 is an ISO standard image format. According to the company, the release of the ECW JPEG 2000 source code is a major advance for the Open Source geospatial community and allows implementation of ECW JPEG 2000 on any desired operating system/platform. The ECW JPEG 2000 SDK and source are free to use for Open Source applications and projects. Commercial software products can use the free unlimited decompression/limited compression license, or pay a one time fee for unlimited compression/decompression.
